HUBERT VO LAUNCHES RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN

LAWMAKER CALLS ON COMMUNITY TO 'TAKE THE NEXT STEP TOWARD POSITIVE CHANGE'

(HOUSTON) -- Calling on the community to join him in taking "the next step toward positive change," State Representative Hubert Vo today launched his re-election campaign, filing papers while surrounded by family and supporters.

"We've come a long way in a short time, and now we have a chance to take the next step toward positive change," Vo said. "Let's consolidate the gains of the past three years and move forward together to make our schools better, our families healthier, and our community stronger."

Vo first won election to the post in 2004 when he defeated a powerful veteran lawmaker and has won praise since then for "a refreshing willingness to work across party lines for the benefit of his constituents." (Houston Chronicle, October 8, 2006).

Among Vo's priorities are reducing property taxes, capping appraisal increases, providing a good business environment, guaranteeing clean air quality, increasing access to health insurance coverage, lowering insurance on homes, and fighting against a move by Austin politicians to expand the state sales tax to food, medicine, doctors visits, hospital stays, car repairs, and a long list of other goods and services.

This year, Vo passed a critical bill to keep students safe by requiring that defibrillators be available on public school campuses and at athletic competitions. Several high profile incidents in which student athletes collapsed and died during training exercises focused attention to the issue.

Vo said he will continue to work to make sure public schools and classroom teachers have the proper tools to do the job. "I believe in no child left behind and no teacher left behind," he said.

As a state legislator, Vo has served on the Insurance Committee and the Law Enforcement Committee. He was honored for his efforts to find food, shelter, and relief for families who were evacuated to the Houston area in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
